ADHD Evaluation

Who needs an evaluation/treatment for ADHD? There are a few options:

  1. Treatment providers such as a pediatrician may have referred you for an evaluation for ADHD. Why? Providers want a full assessment done by a qualified professional, to be able to treat the client to the best of their ability.
  2. “The school keeps calling me”, “everyday they get in trouble”, “I am at a loss as to what to do to help my child”. These are common phrases that I hear from parents who are exhausted trying to communicate with the school and teachers. There is a positive path forward.

The evaluation process consists of the first visit with parents and/or a parent only. Followed by Parent and Teacher completing Vanderbilt Assessment tool. Then an individual assessment is done with the client and the counselor. Then, the counselor can confirm or deny a diagnosis, then begin treatment planning based on individual needs.

Does every kid who has behavior issues or struggles to pay attention have ADHD? No, there are specific criteria that need to be fulfilled to diagnose ADHD. Having an evaluation does not automatically mean that there will be a diagnosis of ADHD.
